Double Cleansing Explained: Do You Really Need It?
Share
Double cleansing is a popular part of Korean skincare, but it does not mean washing your face twice with the same cleanser.
It involves using two different types of cleansers during your evening routine.
The first cleanser removes oil-based impurities. The second cleanser washes away sweat, dirt and any remaining residue.
Step One: Use an Oil-Based Cleanser
The first step can be a cleansing oil, cleansing balm or another oil-based makeup remover.
Oil-based cleansers help dissolve:
- Makeup
- Sunscreen
- Excess sebum
- Long-wearing foundation
- Oil-based impurities
Apply the product to dry skin with dry hands unless the product instructions say otherwise.
Massage it gently over your face, including areas where sunscreen and makeup tend to collect. Add a small amount of water to emulsify the cleanser before rinsing it away.
When a cleansing oil emulsifies, it usually changes into a light, milky texture.
Step Two: Use a Water-Based Cleanser
After rinsing away the oil cleanser, follow with a gentle water-based cleanser.
This may be a gel, foam or cream cleanser, depending on your skin type.
The second cleanse helps remove:
- Sweat
- Dirt
- Remaining cleanser residue
- Water-based impurities
Massage the cleanser gently onto damp skin and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid using very hot water, as it can leave the skin feeling dry or uncomfortable.
Who May Benefit From Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing may be helpful if you:
- Wear makeup
- Use water-resistant sunscreen
- Have oily or congested skin
- Spend time in polluted or dusty environments
- Feel that one cleanser does not remove everything
Do You Need to Double Cleanse Every Morning?
Most people do not need to double cleanse in the morning.
A single gentle cleanser is usually enough. People with very dry or sensitive skin may sometimes prefer rinsing with water or using a mild cleanser, depending on how their skin feels.
Double cleansing is mainly an evening step for removing products and impurities that have collected during the day.
Can Double Cleansing Dry Out Your Skin?
Double cleansing should not leave your skin feeling stripped, tight or squeaky.
Dryness can happen when:
- Both cleansers are too harsh
- You cleanse for too long
- You use very hot water
- You double cleanse when it is not necessary
- Your second cleanser removes too much natural oil
Choose gentle formulas and adjust the routine according to your skin type.
Which Cleanser Should You Choose?
Dry or Sensitive Skin
Look for a gentle cleansing oil or balm followed by a mild cream or low-foam cleanser.
Oily or Combination Skin
Use a lightweight cleansing oil followed by a gentle gel or foam cleanser that does not leave the skin tight.
Makeup-Wearing Skin
Choose an oil cleanser or balm that effectively dissolves long-wearing makeup, followed by a comfortable water-based cleanser.
Your Evening Routine Order
A complete evening routine may look like this:
Oil cleanser → Water-based cleanser → Toner → Essence → Serum or ampoule → Moisturiser
You do not need to double cleanse every night if you have not worn makeup, sunscreen or heavy skincare products. Pay attention to your skin and cleanse only as much as necessary.
At Seoul Glow, you can find cleansing products for different skin types and routines. A good cleanse should leave your skin feeling fresh, comfortable and ready for the next steps—not dry or stripped.
