The Difference Between Toner, Essence, Serum, and Ampoule
Share
Korean skincare includes many product names, and it can be confusing to know what each one does. Toners, essences, serums, and ampoules all support the skin, but they are used for slightly different reasons.
A toner is usually applied after cleansing. It helps refresh the skin and adds light hydration. Korean toners are often gentle and not as harsh as old-style drying toners.
An essence is a lightweight product that adds hydration and helps prepare the skin for deeper care. It is often thinner than a serum but more nourishing than a toner.
A serum is more targeted. It usually focuses on a specific skin concern, such as dullness, dryness, uneven tone, fine lines, or texture.
An ampoule is usually more concentrated than a serum. It can be used when your skin needs extra care or when you want to focus strongly on one skin concern.
The order is usually: Cleanser → Toner → Essence → Serum/Ampoule → Moisturiser → Sunscreen in the morning
You do not need to use all of them at once. For beginners, toner and serum are usually enough. As your routine grows, you can add essence or ampoule depending on your skin goals.
